Overview

The Roast of Christmas Past

Taste Notes: Vibrant Redcurrant & Grapefruit
Country: Myanmar
Region: Ywangan, Shan State
Altitude: 1350 m.a.s.l
Process: Washed
Roast Level: 3

For coffee lovers who like a zingy fruit-forward cup, this single origin from Myanmar is juicy and vibrant - the perfect antidote to any festive season sluggishness. Redcurrant and grapefruit taste notes will guarantee you’ll whizz through the Christmas shopping and the pre-guest cleaning. This is a coffee produced solely by women farmers too, so you can be safe in the knowledge you’re also smashing the patriarchy while you drink it. How many coffees do you know that can do that?!

The Roast of Christmas Present

Taste Notes: Black Fruit, Dark Chocolate & Hazelnut
Country: Kenya
Region: Tinganga, Kiambu County
Altitude: 1830 m.a.s.l
Process: Washed
Roast Level: 2

A washed single origin coffee from Kenya, with taste notes of black fruit, dark chocolate and hazelnut. A complex, fruit forward coffee enhanced by dark chocolate. Perfect for those indulgent moments – go on, you deserve it!

The Roast of Christmas Future

Taste Notes: Candied Orange, Cranberry & Pecan
Country: Colombia
Region: Huila
Altitude: 1830 m.a.s.l
Process: Washed
Roast Level: 3

If you had a stereotypical British school experience, you’ll remember the Christingle: shoving cocktail sticks into an orange and then decorating them with nuts and dried fruit and a flaming candle. That’s what the taste notes of this coffee remind us of (and trying not to stab/burn ourselves in the days before health and safety was a thing). A washed single origin coffee from Colombia, this is a slightly less hazardous way to invoke the season, but with all the nutty, citrusy, fruity flavours intact.

Sustainability

The Roast of Christmas Past

This coffee was produced by The Lady Specialty Coffee, a company created to champion and support women farmers in Ywangan, southern Shan. All their coffee is farmed by exclusively by women, and they benefit from training in sustainable farming practices, quality control and fair pay.

The Roast of Christmas Present

The farms in Tinganga are run by Sasini, who have long placed an emphasis on equity and community. In the case of the estates’ workers this involves the provision of living quarters, early child education, union membership and guaranteed payment above minimum wage.

The Roast of Christmas Future

The Las Gaviotas project is a tribute to the heritage, hard work, and the art of selecting the best coffee by the women who farm the land in Huila, Colombia. The word “Gaviotas” means “seagull” in Spanish, which is a reference to the traditional white costumes the women coffee pickers wore as they worked. The association aims to explore new ways to commercialize their coffee, intending to positively impact the community and generate higher incomes. Additionally, through their sustainable practices, they seek to mitigate the effects of climate change.

KENYA

COLOMBIA

MYANMAR

This coffee comes from Tinganga in the Kenyan Highlands, which boasts deep red volcanic soil, perfect fertile conditions for growing speciality coffee. The farmers here have been growing coffee in the region since 1952.

Colombia is the third biggest producer of coffee in the world, and its Coffee Cultural Landscape is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The altitude in the west of the country, in the Andean region, and the warm weather make for perfect coffee growing conditions all year round.

The coffee trade in Myanmar grew in the 1980s following a UN project to replace illegal crops coffee trees. In the east of Myanmar, in the Ywangan area of Southern Shan State, the climate and the soil in this area is perfect for producing coffee. Climate and terroir are perfect for coffee cultivation in various parts of the country, particularly in the Shan hills which stretch into the coffee growing regions of Yunnan and Thailand.
