Overview

Coffee tastes better with friends, and so it’s no surprise to see a coffee producer made up of childhood pals thriving in the speciality market. Ekata coffee from Karala in India has teamed up with local farmers to help process the best single-origin coffees from the region. Using the anaerobic honey process, the sweet sticky mucilage that remains after the coffee cherry is pulped is what gives the coffee its full-bodied fruit flavour after fermentation. This coffee, from the Biligiriranga Hills, has taste notes of sweet melon and tangerine, balanced by earthy walnut.

Sustainability

Ekata started in 2016 with a mission to see single-origin, shade-grown coffee in biodiverse terroir processed to international standards of quality, while protecting the flora and fauna of the mountain ranges they farm. Their partners in producing this coffee, Emerald Haven, have been dedicated to giving back to the community, building schools and temples.

India

India is the 7th largest producer of coffee globally, with most coming from the Karnataka state, where this Guest Bean originates. What makes Indian coffee different to coffee produced in other countries is that it is predominantly shade-grown. Inter-cropping the coffee with other spice plants like cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg impact on the flavours usually associated with beans harvested in India. The majority of Indian coffee is exported, providing a significant contribution to the Indian economy among other plantation crops. Over a million people are involved in the Indian coffee industry, with around 250,000 farmers working on over 52,000 coffee plantations.
